      FAQs

Exactly what kind of services does Community Residences offer?
CR offers residential (small group home) and case management (social service coordination) services to people struggling with mental illnesses, disabilities and homelessness.  Our efforts are designed to enable people to live as independently and with as high a quality of life as possible.  To this end, our residential services support individual growth and personal development, while our case management services enable people to attain and maintain independent living arrangements and integrate fully into the broader community.

Is Community Residences a government agency?
No, CR is a private company that contracts with government entities to provide services to citizens.

Is Community Residences a non-profit company?
Yes, CR is registered with the IRS as a 501(c) 3 agency, meaning it is recognized by the federal government as a non-profit entity and that donations to it are therefore tax-deductible for the donor.

      How is Community Residences funded?
The bulk of our income comes from Medicaid and government funded contracts.  These tax payer resources are very specific, often tied to a particular individual and always to the provision of specified services.  These resources, however, do not always completely cover the cost of the services we provide.  We rely on individual donations, client fees (paid on a sliding scale), grants, fundraising and endowment income to pay for otherwise unfunded services like dental and psychiatric care, prescriptions (co-pays or 100% for uncovered clients), resident recreation, resident room personalization improvements and supplemental therapy programs like gardening, art and horseback riding.

Is Community Residences licensed, and if so by whom?
Yes, CR is licensed by multiple government agencies, all of whom have oversight over our operations and all of whom regularly audit our operations, from the way we operate our programs to the manner in which we manage our finances.  Specific home licenses are available through our main office.

      Where is your agency headquartered?
      In Chantilly, Virginia.

Are your operations limited to Virginia?
No.  While the bulk of our programs and all of our residences are in Richmond and throughout Northern Virginia, we also operate extensive case management services in Maryland, specifically in Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties and in Baltimore City.

How many employees do you have and are you hiring?
Community Residences employs around 350 full- and part-time people, with a monthly payroll of approximately $1.5 million.  Positions are generally available.  Please visit our Recruitment page for job openings and an application.

Do you have openings in your group homes and if so how can a person apply to become a resident?
Community Residences does have occasional openings, and every effort is made to insure a successful match between an individual and a particular home and its current residents.  Often, there can be a waiting list.  Please visit our Openings page for a list of current program availability and to Register for more information.  Once registered, you will be contacted by a CR staff person within two (2) working days.

How can I help support your efforts to improve the quality of life, recognize the dignity and build the self-esteem of those struggling with mental illnesses, disabilities and homelessness?  Community Residences works with volunteers and accepts monetary donations in a variety of forms, from planned gifts that offer significant estate tax advantages to designated donations for specified purposes.  Please visit our Join the Effort! page for details and to offer your time or gift.

If I have a question not answered here, whom can I contact?
