What is Arlington ArtWorks?
Arlington ArtWorks, a Community Residences program, provides a structured setting in which those individuals with a wide range of disabilities may have the opportunity to learn and expand their creative talents through various art media.
The program further demonstrates to those who are unfamiliar with chronic mental illness the talent that these individuals possess and their ability to transcend their diagnosis. It is the only one of its kind in Northern Virginia. It is a center where developmentally disabled and mentally ill adults can go and work on art projects in a supportive atmosphere with trained staff that are skilled at helping them address problems and issues as they arise as well as helping them with their artwork.
Located in the Clarendon area of Arlington with easy public transportation access, the Arlington ArtWorks program is provided at no cost to clients. It is open on a drop-in basis Monday through Thursday 10 AM to 3 PM and Friday 10 AM to 1 PM. Staff are always available during these times to assist and support clients with their individual projects as well as to introduce them to new art media.
Why Art?
Since its beginning in May 2006, Arlington ArtWorks has become a positive component for many of its participants. Participants demonstrate a level of eagerness and willingness to not only engage in art activities, but also to socialize with others who are at the program. This atmosphere creates a positive setting where participants plan, initiate and complete projects as well as interact and socialize with other consumers. Arlington ArtWorks supports this collegiate atmosphere which fosters personal as well as artistic growth. It has been demonstrated that participation in art therapy programs such as Arlington ArtWorks provides individuals with improved problem-solving skills, enhanced socialization and interpersonal skills. Additionally, art therapy has demonstrated the ability to promote emotional growth, identify and utilize personal resources and instill a sense of control and personal empowerment (Green & Reinhard, 1995; Keeling & Bermudez, 2006; Matto, 1998; Stephenson, 2006)
The Business of Art
In addition to displaying participants’ artwork at our Clarendon studio, our artists are encouraged to display their work at our frequent 'Open House' parties open to the public. When a piece of art is sold, the artist receives 75% of the sale price and 25% goes to Arlington ArtWorks to purchase art supplies. This 75/25 split allows participants the opportunity to be recognized financially and provides the program with money to buy the raw materials for more art projects.
When I came into the Art World the Dawn of Recovery helped me accomplish my goals as an Artist. Looking back on this past year makes me feel Happiness and Joy within my Inner Self. Lisa and Laurie are great to work with because they helped me a great deal. The Dawn of Recovery can happen to Anyone. It is the inspiration of Life that shines through each and every one of us only if we let the light shine.
